Kia Ora, Welcome to Wawata Reo!
Wawata Reo is a Sydney-based business dedicated to teaching te reo Māori and immersing learners in Māori culture through fully interactive, face-to-face programs. We offer a learning experience with customised lesson plans for all ages and all walks of life.
Our kaupapa is to create a safe, supportive and inclusive space where people can begin or continue their reo journey, reconnect with culture, and strengthen identity, especially for those who may not have had the opportunity before. Whether you are learning for the first time or returning to your roots, we walk alongside you every step of the way.

Our Mission
At Wawata Reo, our mission is to grow te reo Māori through face-to-face learning that strengthens connection to language, to people, and to whakapapa.
We believe learning te reo Māori is most powerful when it happens in shared spaces, kanohi ki te kanohi, where relationships are formed and confidence is built together. Our kaupapa creates a supportive environment where learners can reconnect with their roots, deepen their sense of identity, and grow their reo in a way that feels authentic and grounded in tikanga Māori.
Through our programmes, we aim to nurture both language and belonging, because when we speak our reo, we strengthen who we are.
Who We Are
Wawata Reo is a Māori-led kaupapa dedicated to the revitalisation and teaching of te reo Māori through meaningful, face-to-face learning experiences. Our approach is grounded in tikanga Māori and centred on whanaungatanga, believing that strong relationships are key to confident language learning. We understand that for many learners, learning te reo Māori is about more than language. It is about reconnecting to whakapapa, identity, and culture. At Wawata Reo, we create safe, supportive spaces where learners are encouraged to grow at their own pace, ask questions, and build confidence alongside others on the same journey.
Wawata Reo is led by Taonga Kamura-McGregor, an experienced kaiako with a strong background in Māori education and kapa haka. Taonga has taught at Palmerston North Boys’ High School in Aotearoa New Zealand, working closely with tauira to support both academic learning and cultural development. Alongside classroom teaching, Taonga has completed and taught kapa haka, bringing a deep understanding of Māori performing arts, tikanga, and reo into his teaching practice.
Taonga’s teaching style is relational, encouraging, and grounded in lived experience. His passion lies in helping learners reconnect with their roots, strengthen their confidence, and develop a genuine relationship with te reo Māori. This philosophy sits at the heart of Wawata Reo and shapes programmes such as He Kākano, where learners are supported to grow from strong foundations.
At Wawata Reo, we believe every learner begins as a seed and with the right care, connection, and guidance, that seed will flourish.
